Went shopping yesterday to buy a pillow and a water bottle = the most stressful experience ever!!
Praise the Lord for my room mate who could speak more of the language than me....it was SO overwhelming not understanding a word they say!! So eventually got a pillow! :0)
In Brazil the shop system works very differently, a person will help you pick out what you want (in most stores) and then write out a receipt, and you go to one counter and pay and then go over to another counter and collect your item...was very confusing, I wondered around lost with everyone pointing at random counters trying to tell me where to go!
I came home, feeling like rubbish - not understanding and trying hard with the language too, plus having really dirty feet (Brazil is very dusty!)...I think I am a little hard on myself, everyone has kindly reminded me that it is only my first day!
Went to a Brazilian market today - was a very cool experience, went with 3 others (2 guys and a girl) from my course (one of the guys only really spoken Portuguese)....it was a better shopping experience, and learned lots and feeling happier about the whole language thing - it will take time and discipline!
Will write more and add pictures about the market - need to get them off Rachel's camera.....off to have a nap now, before we properly start our course tonight!!
Eleanor! Give yourself some grace girl! You're in a brand new place that's WAY different to anything you're used to! Sounds like lots of fun though... and I love that you have popcorn at your fingertips at every street corner. ;) I'm looking forward to following along on your adventures! xxx
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what all the girls told me in my room - it will take time! It is just so frustrating not being able to communicate with people - especially the children! I am falling in love with Brasil more everyday...love the culture, and the people! Hope you are doing well Adriel xx
