On Monday I went to the Sower House, which is a community centre for deaf young people and children. It gives them an opportunity to learn, and be around other deaf people their age....They are the most enthusiastic people I have met...and so welcoming too:
You get given a name by a deaf person - so you do not have to spell your name out all the time - as that is too long. Mine is an E and you move the E shape over my mouth in the shape of a smile, as they noticed I smile a lot! I liked the name :0)
I learnt that English and portuguese sign language is very different - for example the sign for 'later' in England is the sign for 'stealing' in Brazil!
It is an awesome ministry the Sower House - as there is a lot of discrimination still in Brazil towards deaf people. Also a lot of the parents of deaf children do not bother to learn the signs, so the child becomes very isolated from their family, which also causes them to now learn, or get an education, or learn how to build relationships. This ministry not only works with the children and young people but also with their families.
I hope over the next year here I will be able to do more work with the deaf community as it is so needed and so much fun - they just want to learn and build relationships!
