Today as a school we went to visit some of the other 'homes' and community centres that the YWAM base run here in Belo Horizonte. Today we saw three that are based in or on the border of a favela - which is known for its really high levels of crack use...
We saw the Rock house - which a community centre where children can come and do sports, learn about God and have a safe place to hang out. They also have very good relationships with the drug dealers and have breakfast with them on Saturday mornings, and teach them about Jesus and how to live properly. They are actually also just about to start an Alpha course!
The Sower house - a place for deaf children to be helped with their education, and learn about Jesus, the house also does a lot of work with the families teaching them how to communicate with their children as they do not know how to sign. I have learnt how to sign my name in Brazilian! (to see the video look on my facebook page)
Finally we went to the Rescue House - which works first hand with children off the streets, by feeding them, and playing with them and building relationships with them and their families. This is also the 'first phase' where the children show they are committed to come off the streets, by meeting up regularly with the staff of the rescue house - before being put into the Recanto (girls house) or Restoration house (boys) to live (until can be put back into their family home, or old enough to have own place and job)
Here is the view from the Sower House...
It just breaks my heart to see the rubbish and broken houses and that just 5 minutes away there are nice houses and less crime and a safer place for children....the injustice in the world sucks!!
