Yesterday we went to visit one of the community centres YWAM has out in a favela (slum) - called the Lighthouse...amazing facilities; classrooms, multi-purpose sports court, swimming pool, mini playground etc.. There was an amazing view over the whole city of Belo Horizonte....
But when you turn around and look at the view from the other side of the Lighthouse, it broke my heart - it was a massive Favela....
It made me just stop and stare and think about how lucky I am - that my house is painted nicely, it's not hanging onto a hillside, have a garden, that I don't have to share a room, we have constant electricity, clean running water, excellent sanitation/hygiene facilities, safety to walk around the neighbourhood and so much more...never again can I complain.
The reality really hit yesterday when driving through the favela of the injustice and diversity of the world - and that just offering a little to them, like clean clothes, a good day at school, playing with them to forget their world - means SO much...
It just broke my heart - that I can be so ungrateful, where there are millions of people; children, teenagers, adults and old people living how they do...where does their hope come from when living in just poor conditions surrounded by violence!?
